The Men's Club

The men's club of St. John of the Cross was organized in April, 1954, with a membership of approximately 90 men.  

 

Parents Guild

The Parents Guild of St. John of the Cross School was formed in February, 1949.  The object of the Parents' Guild was: "To coordinate the spiritual and educational forces of the home and school in a program of Catholic child training".

 

The Altar Society

The Altar Society was organized in July 1938.  The object of the Altar Society was to provide the things necessary for the divine worship and adornment of the Church which is God's sacramental dwelling place in our midst...to keep the altar and things pertaining to the altar neat and clean, to unite in a special way the Catholic women of the parish so that they may be dedicated to a labor of love in care of the altar, their Church and general interest of the parish, keeping in mind the women mentioned in the gospels.

 

St. John of the Cross Choir

The first choir of St. John of the Cross Church was built around the organ donated by Dorothy Goodbody when services were held on Olive Street in the Alvarez residence.  

 

Knights Of Columbus/San Miguel Council, Lemon Grove, California

    The Knights of Columbus Organization was begun in the 1800's by Father Michael McGivney of New Haven, Conn., as a Society for practical Catholics only.  

    Many of the Knights have aided in the work of the Saint John of the Cross Parish and are active in their successful annual events.

 

Court of Teresa of Avila #1580

    Court Teresa of Avila, #1580, Catholic Daughters of America, was instituted on August 16, 1951, at St. John of the Cross Auditorium.  There were twenty-nine members present.

    The Catholic Daughters of America is a national organization, founded in 1903 with its headquarters located in New York.   The aim of the Catholic Daughters is to propagate and preserve the Catholic Faith, intensify patriotism, to dispense Charity and further Catholic charitable projects; to promote the material, moral and intellectual development of Catholic womanhood and to protect Catholic girls.  The National organization and the State and local court have a varied program to interest all Catholic women.

 

Junior Court Teresa of Avila

    Junior Court Teresa of Avila No. 1580, Catholic Daughters of America was instituted Sunday, January 27, 1957, at St. John of the Cross parish hall.  At this time the California State Chairman of Juniors, Mrs. Salome Zaharris, with the aid of Junior Court St. Margaret from Chula Vista instituted 59 members and instituted the officers.

 

Girl Scouts

    The Girl Scout program has been a vital part of extra-curricular activity at St. John of the Cross from the very first year. 

    Eleven girls made up the first troop of Scouts, with very interested and devoted mothers to lead girls through Scouting.

    The Women's Club first sponsored the Girl Scouts and at their dissolution the Parents Guild took up sponsorship.

    A Vigorous Brownie Program was begun and each year many girls have widened their horizons through Intermediate and Senior Scouting.   The Crowning joy of achievement for Catholic Girl Scouts is the Ancilla Domini Award.  In 1957, thirteen girls qualified for the award.
